Elemental Analysis (ED-XRF) of Bricks from Drajna de Sus and Târgsoru Vechi castra

The research project was initiated by the Prahova County Museum of History and Archaeology from Ploiești, with the support of the “Horia Hulubei” National Institute for R&D in Physics and Nuclear Engineering in Măgurele and the “ISTROS” Society for Historical Sciences.

The project had as aim to establish a chemical analysis of the stamped bricks of the two Roman forts situated 45 km apart from each other. As the two military camps had at a certain point common troops (legio XI Claudia Pia Fidelis, legio I Italica and cohors I Commagenorum), the researchers wanted to find out if the bricks, especially those stamped by the named troops, had certain elements in common. By employing Energy Dispersive X-ray Fluorescence (ED-XRF) analyses on 98 samples, the end results stated that these military products were made locally, by using local resources, thusly contradicting the theory that the stamped bricks would have been transported from greater military centers on the Danube, to be used in building the Roman forts in newly conquered territories.

The detailed results of this research project were presented in the poster session of the 9th edition of the World Archaeological Congress, Prague, 3-8 July 2022.
